What are the main characteristics of Austrian culture?

Im doing a paper on Austrian film, particularly on the film Import/Export. I am exploring basic themes of Austrian film and how they relate to the culture. It seems that Austrian films portray life “as is” and nothing is forced. They are often considered pessimistic and sometimes miserable. I know Austrian people are not this way, but what cultural/social characteristics of society would make Austrian filmmakers portray films in this way?
